Advice on travel and export of aid to Romania
This 350 bed hospital serves
children from 1 day old to 18 years, from Brasov county, a
part of the Transylvania region of Romania which is the size
of the British county of Surrey. Wherever you are in the world,
please consider making a donation to the work of the Trust.
With the very difficult conditions in Romania we can make a

Persistent high rates of inflation since the revolution in
December 1989, coupled with a serious reduction in
allocations of funds for the health service from central
government, have resulted in serious erosion of the
hospitals budget. By 1997 indebtedness to drug
suppliers had stretched into the billions of Lei, and it had
become impossible for the hospital to place any further drug
orders.
Staff pay has been at a persistently low level in Romania,
and as a result the hospital is short staffed. Salaries for
consultants are about £3 per day, with lower rates for
doctors and nurses (food prices are similar to those in UK).
Typically 2 nurses may care for 40 children.

Over 6 years of regular visits and support the Trust has
developed particularly close relationships with the Medical
Director, the consultant specialising in asthma and allergy,
the senior pathologists and the play therapy co-ordinator.
For asthma we supply nebulisers, test instruments, allergy
test kits and other consumables, and the total requirement
for inhalers and nebules.
With considerable help from Armstrong's of Newbury, we have
supplied and installed two industrial washing machines, which
bring the laundry hygene levels up to British NHS standards,
replacing very old machines, some of which had failed and
some of which were in a very poor condition.
We have supplied a number of equipment items for pathology,
including a high quality analyser and computer, together with
continuing supplies of reagents, laboratory glassware and
plastic items, and other consumables.
We have arranged regular supplies of medical journals, which
helps to reduce the sense of isolation felt by Romanian
doctors, and occasionally we subsidise their attendance at
international conferences.
There is no gluten free flour available in Romania for
children suffering from coeliac disease, so we keep the
hospital supplied with suitable preparations for baking
bread, cakes and biscuits, which are issued to both
in-patients and out-patients from all over Brasov county.
From time to time we also supply special formula baby milk
for children who need it.
We supply considerable quantities of materials and toys for
play therapy, which is an important department. We wish to
move to greater regularity in the supplies of drugs and
medicines that we give to the hospital. Occasionally we
receive bulk donations from manufacturers, but generally we
purchase at wholesale prices and ship on our next aid load.
