We are in constant e-mail and fax contact with the church in Romania through whom all our aid is directed, and we only undertake projects which they have put forward to us. We know that our aid reaches the right place!
The church has a small 'clothes and grocery store' in the basement. Many poor or homeless people come to the church for help, and the pastor gives aid to those he knows are in genuine hardship.
It is quite common for young parents to come for help with baby milk powder and baby food for babies they otherwise cannot feed. We aim to keep the church stocked with these items, some of which are sent to needy families outside the city, and even in other parts of Transylvania.
The elderly are helped with clothes and food, and the church also runs a dispensary. It may be that patients cannot find the medicine that has been prescribed, or cannot afford the price. Supporters from UK and elsewhere keep the church dispensary supplied, and prescriptions are now met by a pharmacist attached to the church. There are occasions when hospitals and clinics contact the church dispensary for items they cannot find elsewhere.
The church itself has been extended in recent years, by converting the roof space into four rooms which can be used for Bible study, etc. We gave a little help with the financing of this project. The labour was provided by local people, and wherever possible materials are purchased locally.
The church uses a VW minibus, either conveying people, or for the distribution of aid sent to the church from various British groups. From time to time we have needed to replace parts, but now the time has come for a new vehicle, which we are currently buying in Belgium.
