Conditions in Romania
In the years since the changes of December 1989 life has become materially harder for the majority of people. Inflation has run at up to 300% per annum. There is now a much greater range of goods in the shops, but many items on display are beyond the means of most people.
Unemployment is said to be about 10%. The standard pay for those in work is the equivalent of £60 per month, but shop prices were similar to those in UK. Those working in hospitals and schools, regardless of their position, are particularly badly paid. Salary levels are about the same for all grades, hospital consultants or bus drivers.

Pay for the unemployed and those retired is very much lower. Pensions vary between 50p and £16 per month - many have no income whatsoever. We are providing 'pensions' for widows and funds to foster abandoned children in caring families - you can contribute to this work from anywhere in the world through
The budgets of such institutions as the Children's Hospital have been frozen, and have lost value as a result of inflation. There is little money available for running costs, and none for capital investment in hospitals, schools, etc..
There is a great need for business investment, but little available capital. After 40 years of discouraging people from making decisions, there seems to be little entrepreneurial leadership in evidence. We are aware of an Association of Christian Private Enterprises, which is seeking to help it's members find markets, particularly overseas.
There is scope to develop the tourist industry. Both skiing and summer holidays are available in the holiday village of Poiana Brasov, a few miles outside the city of Brasov. There are resorts on the Black Sea coast for seaside holidays. The climate is good for summer holidays, but there is still scope to improve the infrastructure.
In our experience the railways run well, and are very cheap for Western visitors. The roads which were generally in poor repair have now been improved in many cases but, with vehicles ranging from horse drawn carts to lorries to cars to coaches, all operating at widely different speeds, they can be dangerous.
