The Cleaford Christian Trust helps four village schools in the Brasov area of Romania, with a total of 800 children.

The schools are very short of materials and equipment, unless they receive overseas aid. We are given, and have sent on to the schools, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, geometric instruments, paper, exercise books, craft materials and teaching aids.
There is a music teacher at one of the schools, and we have sent 100 secondhand recorders and a large quantity of triangles which were kindly donated by a local music shop.
We have an account with a British supplier of educational materials and equipment, and so can place bulk orders at reduced prices. Much of what we have sent has been unwanted items donated by British schools.

Advice on travel and export of aid to Romania
There has been an enormous increase in the number of children going to school since the arrangements for paying 'family allowance' were altered. Previously this small amount of money was paid through the father's place of work, but now it is only paid if children are on a school register.
Although there is a high truancy rate in the villages, the net increase in children attending has overloaded the resources. Buildings are too small to hold all the children at one time, so half come for the morning, and the other half come in the afternoon.
Buildings are generally run down, and heating is often well below British standards. Children may attend classes in hats and coats.
It is not unknown for children to be unable to come to school for lack of clothes and shoes, so the schools we support are a useful distribution route for second hand clothes and shoes that we send in our aid shipments.
It was through the director of the village schools that the church became aware of the plight of a family of three abandoned children. The children are now being looked after by families in the church. We run a scheme for British supporters to sponsor the upkeep of these children.
Sponsors receive regular up-dates, photos and videos, to give news of the progress the children are making. Funds are transmitted to Brasov under this scheme at six-monthly intervals. Individual gifts, from those who do not wish to make a continuing commitment, are usually included in the transfer.
